I believe that the physical universe, the realm of nature, is the visible creation of God. It declares God’s existence and gives a trustworthy revelation of God’s character and purpose. In Scripture, God declares that through His creation all humanity recognizes His existence, power, glory, and wisdom. An honest study of nature – its physical, biological, and social aspects – can prove useful in a person’s search for truth. Properly understood, God’s Word (Scripture) and God’s world (nature), as two revelations (one verbal, one physical) from the same God, will never contradict each other. Remember, all truth is God’s truth!
If God’s Word in the Bible and God’s expression of Himself in nature seem to clash, we must dig deeper to understand each. It is our understanding of the data, and not the data themselves, which presents the problem. Increasing our understanding constitutes a large part of our assignment here on earth. – Hugh Ross
I am an old-earth-creationist. In other words, I do not agree with young-earth-creationists’ – who believe God created the universe in six literal 24 hour days – nor do I believe that is what the Bible teaches. Actually, the Hebrew word for “day” has three literal definitions: 12 hours, 24 hours, or a long time period. Now, if you are a Christian who believes differently, please understand, that’s not a problem with me! This is not an issue to divide us, after all, it won’t be long before we’ll be in heaven and know for sure exactly how it all happened. In the mean time we can respectfully disagree.
One of the biggest mistakes many make, is to assume that the only “creation references” in the Bible exist in the first two chapters of Genesis. In fact, there are over 21 major biblical passages that address creation. No single passage reveals the entire masterpiece, however, by integrating the 21 passages that address creation and constructing a scenario consistent with all those texts, the scope and splendor of creation takes on breathtaking proportions.
Many Christian leaders affirm an old-earth creation interpretation, including Norman Geisler, the late Gleason Archer (considered by most to be the world’s greatest Hebrew language scholar), J.I Packer, C. S. Lewis, Francis Schaeffer, Chuck Colson, the late Dr. Walter Martin, Hank Hannegraff, Walter Kaiser, Paul E. Little (Moody Bible Institute), Dr. James P. Moreland, Lee Strobel, Benjamin B. Warfield and Dr. James Montgomery Boice – just to name a few. As you can see, I’m in great company.
I believe big bang cosmology is one of the most potent evidences for the existence of God, pointing directly to the necessity of a Transcendent beginning of the universe. Many Christian apologists have affirmed that big bang cosmology is consistent with Scripture. I believe that the fossil record is a reasonably accurate history of life on earth, including the existence of hominids before modern humans. I believe that God supernaturally and miraculously created Adam from the “dust of the earth” (not a pre-existing being) just as described in Genesis 1 and 2. Adam and Eve were the first humans, and from them came the entire human race.
