Nancy Pelosi and Proverbs 1:7

Nancy Pelosi has said some crazy things, such as; “To create jobs, the quickest way to do it is to create more money for food stamps.” But the wackiest by far, and now her most famous quote is…

“We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”

Now, what if I told you that the principle behind her crazy assertion is actually a biblical truth, purported by the likes of King Solomon, the Apostle Paul, and Augustine (the most significant theologian of the first millennium).

First, let’s dissect what the former Speaker of the House was actually saying. Nancy Pelosi was saying that in order for the American people to find out what is really in the 1,990 page Health Care Reform Bill (more pages than War and Peace), congress would first need to pass the bill into law. Then, at the point it was approved, everyone would be enlightened to the logical genius of its ruling legislation.

King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

This verse is saying that a prerequisite to knowledge, in fact, the only way to know the whole truth about God, is to first believe that he exists, and worship him as the creator.

The “Pelosi-logic” correlation to Proverbs 1:7 is as follows; We have to believe in God so that you can find out what He’s all about. Though that sounds crazy, it’s actually the truth!

Augustine is widely known for his writings on epistemology (the study of knowledge). One of his best known sayings was credo ut intelligram, a Latin phrase that may be translated “I believe in order to understand.” The idea being that non-Christians do not fear the Lord, therefore, there is a limit to what they can know.

The Apostle Paul supports this same principle in Romans 1:18-32 saying that those who suppress the revelation of God in nature, refusing to acknowledge God as the creator and give thanks to him, darken the light of truth. In other words, ignoring God retards one’s ability to accurately understand all of God’s truth. It’s not that unbelievers have no knowledge of the truth, they simply fall short of a complete understanding of all that God has revealed to us through nature and his written Word.

“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.” Romans 1:21-23

Paul puts it this way in his letter to the Ephesians; “[People] are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.” Ephesians 4:18

So is Nancy Pelosi a modern day theologian, the likes of Augustine and the Apostle Paul? No, because  the “gods” she wants us to first believe in, before we can become fully enlightened to the truth, is none other than our elected politicians. That would be a very serious mistake!
